The Ocean Suffering Because of Plastic Wastes

최종 수정일: 2023년 12월 21일

By Alex Park

Do you know how much plastic waste is washed away into the sea in only one year in Korea? It is about 20,000 tons. Only plastic! Then, what about the world? All around the world, approximately 80,000,000 tons. More surprisingly, in Korea, only 20% of the waste washed into the ocean is plastic. That means the total waste that washes into the ocean in Korea is about 20,000 times 5, which is 100,000 tons. That is a lot of trash. If this situation continues, Earth will be full of trash, and Earth’s life will end soon enough. We won’t be able to see the blue ocean with beautiful marine creatures.

Let's look at what's causing this problem, what it's doing, and how we can fix it.

What Causes Marine Debris? Here are some reasons why marine debris is created.

Plastic Pollution: About 8 million tons of plastic enter the oceans every year. Things like bottles, bags, and packaging don't break down quickly.

Fishing Mess: Fishing gear like nets and lines can get left in the water, hurting and killing sea animals.

Trash from Land: When we don't manage our trash properly on land, it can end up in oceans through rivers and storms.

Those were the specific and most clear reasons why marine debris was created. However, what does this marine debris specifically worsen the world?

Harm to Animals: Sea animals get tangled in debris, and they sometimes eat it, which makes them sick or kills them.

Money Problems: Industries like tourism and fishing suffer from polluted beaches and fewer fish. Cleaning up costs a lot.

Health Worries: Trash in the oceans can make seafood unsafe to eat. Also, dirty coasts can spread diseases.

We could see that increasing amounts of marine debris cause lots of damage to the ocean and to us. Then, how Can We Fix This? Here's what we can do:

Use Less Plastic: Everyone can cut down on plastic use. Governments and companies can make better choices too.

Manage Trash Better: We need better ways to deal with trash, especially in places where waste management isn't good.

Fish Responsibly: Fishing industries should be careful with their gear and clean up old stuff. Work Together: Since this is a worldwide issue, countries need to team up to solve it. International agreements can help.

Use less Disposable Materials: Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change.

Marine debris is a big problem hurting oceans and everything that depends on them. By understanding why it happens and what it does, we can all take steps to make things better. It's up to us to protect our oceans and keep them clean for now and the future.
